Wanting to eliminate dental health issues before they become problematic? Preventative dentistry may be right for you! Preventative dentistry is used to describe dental procedures like cleaning and exams that provide preventative maintenance to your overall oral health. Just like cars needing oil changes and tire rotations, preventative dentistry can help you avoid costly dental procedures further down the road.

Above & Beyond Dentistry, Rockford IL
What is covered during a dental exam?
A comprehensive dental exam will be performed by Dr. Heather Shick, DMD at your initial dental visit. At regular check-up exams, Dr. Shick and your hygienist will include the following:
Examination of diagnostic x-rays: X-rays are essential for finding deficiencies with your oral health. These areas include tooth decay, oral tumors, cysts, and bone loss. X-rays also help determine tooth and root positions within the mouth.
Oral cancer screenings: Dr. Shick will check the face, neck, lips, tongue, throat, tissues, and gums for any signs of oral cancer.
Gum disease evaluation: Dr. Shick will check your gums and bone surrounding your teeth for any signs of periodontal disease.
Examination of tooth decay: Dr. Shick will check all tooth surfaces for tooth decay and cavities.
Examination of existing restorations: Dr. Shick will check all current fillings, dental crowns, dental bridges.
What is covered during a dental cleaning?
Professional dental cleanings (dental prophylaxis) are performed in office by our Registered Dental Hygienists (Patricia Stennerson and Kristen Mazza). Your cleaning appointment will include a dental exam and the following:
Removal of tartar (calculus): Tooth tartar is hardened plaque that has been left on the tooth for an extended time and is now attached to the tooth surface. Tartar forms above and below the gum line and can only be removed with special dental instruments.
Removal of plaque: Plaque is a sticky, almost invisible film that forms on your teeth. It is a growing colony of living bacteria, food debris, and saliva. The bacteria produces toxins that inflame the gums. This inflammation is the start of periodontal disease.
Teeth polishing: Remove stain and plaque that is not otherwise removed during brushing and scaling.
What are the preventative dentistry procedures?
Dental sealants and fillings are two very common preventative dentistry procedures. While the procedures are different, they are both designed to prevent your tooth from experiencing significant decay that could lead to an extraction or root canal.
In addition, digital x-rays are often used during a routine cleaning and dental exam to look for any problems that may be occurring that a patient is not even aware of. Just like in any other area of your health, early detection is key to ensuring your oral health stays intact.
What to expect during your preventative dentistry consultation?
During your preventative dentistry consultation, the dental professional and assistant will carefully examine the tooth or teeth to be treated and may order x-rays or other scans if a deeper look is necessary. Throughout this time, the dentist will explain their findings as well as help to formulate a treatment plan so that you can have the smile you’ve always wanted.
